The Art of Eating Well with Ezra Cohen
While many artists begin their careers in Hell’s Kitchen, Ezra Cohen has never left the neighborhood.
When it comes to community artists, it doesn’t get more local than Ezra Cohen. Born in Hell’s Kitchen in 1993, he’s been exhibiting his art in the community annually since the age of ten.
Known for his large, vibrant paintings in a wide-ranging palette of colors and shapes, Ezra began studying with local artist Edla Cusick at the age of nine before joining the Art Students League of New York, and then going on to study at NYU and FIT. His paintings have been exhibited in across the city and northern Europe, and his works can be found in both public and private collections nationwide. He currently teaches young artists at his studio and is a cofounder of Work in Progress, a collective of New York City-based music, video and visual artists.
But it wasn't his art that Ezra wanted to talk about.
It was the food.
So, without further ado — artist Ezra Cohen’s Hell’s Kitchen Five: Where to Eat
- Claudio’s Pizzeria has been through two fires but continues to create what many call “the best slice in Hell’s Kitchen.” Claudio himself has been feeding our community for almost 30 years. The tri-color slice is up there, but a plain slice is the ultimate test.
- Vegetarian or carnivore, there is something for you at Ariana Afghan Kebab, a shining light in a sea of restaurants lining 9th Avenue. Using recipes that have been handed down for a hundred or so years, everything is made to order and delivered with love. Order the Bolanee Qandana as an appetizer, Pumpkin Curry and Lamb Kofta for your entrees, and a Firnee for dessert. You are welcome.
- LumLum Thai opened in 2021 in the location of what was once a Hell’s Kitchen staple, Pam Real Thai. This Thai seafood bar will have you coming back over and over again. Order whatever you want, you can’t go wrong.
- The small, black-owned espresso bar Frisson Espresso 44 delivers, period. Whether you’re into a strong dark cup or something a little fancier, you can choose from a number of classics all made with love.
- Finally El Mil Sabores, a small Mexican grocery, has amazing classic tacos in the back. Try a mole tamale or steak sopes (with everything, obviously).
